07.05 Fabric Fabrication Exercise Assignment

Assignment Deliverables

  1. Sewn Fabric Fabrication Exercise

Assignment Overview

This exercise builds pattern drafting skills, sewing accuracy, and understanding of the transformation of flat planar forms into 3D fabric fabrications.

Process

  1. Use a compass to draw a 6" to 12" diameter circle on a piece of paper.
  2. With the compass or a ruler, add .5" seam allowance around the outside of the circle. This will make the new diameter 1" larger than the original circle.
  3. Label this circle Tube Cap.
  4. On a new piece of paper, draw a square at least 2" larger than the outer diameter of your Tube Cap.
  5. Draw lines from opposing corners of the square to find the center.
  6. From this center point, draw a circle with a 1" smaller diameter than the first circle drawn in step 1. This creates the same size circle but with an interior .5" seam allowance included.\
  7. Remember that the circumference of a circle is πd or C = πd or as you may recognize C = 2πr
  8. Use the formula above to calculate the circumference of the original circle from step 1.
  9. Draw a 12" tall x C rectangle on a piece of paper.
  10. Add a .5" seam allowance.
  11. Cut these new pattern pieces out of scrap fabric.
  12. Sew the rectangle to make a tube.
  13. Connect the cap on one end of the tube.
  14. Connect the square on the other end of the tube.
  15. Be exact on your seam allowance sewing. If you sew a smaller or larger seam allowance then the pattern pieces will not line up.
