Assignment Overview
PPreviously, you designed laser cut display stands for your 3D printed body extension sculptures. For this assignment, you will apply those fabrication and modeling skills to an existing or new original artwork of your own creation.
Select an artwork that would benefit from a custom display system. Carefully measure the artwork and make sketches exploring how it could be supported, mounted, suspended, or otherwise presented. Then use Fusion to design a display stand primarily made from laser cut acrylic.
Consider both function and appearance. The stand should securely support the artwork while also becoming part of how the artwork is experienced.
Possible display approaches include:
- Freestanding tabletop or floor displays
- Wall-mounted supports
- Hanging or suspended displays
- Layered acrylic structures
- Acrylic panels connected with bolts or other fasteners
- Acrylic joined with appropriate acrylic adhesive
- Laser cut parts combined with 3D printed brackets or connectors
Instructions
1. Select and Measure an Artwork
Choose an existing or new original artwork that you want to display. Take accurate measurements of the artwork, including any important dimensions needed to determine how it will rest, attach, hang, or connect to the display structure.
2. Sketch Display Ideas
Make several quick sketches exploring possible display solutions before beginning the Fusion model.
Think about:
- Where the artwork makes contact with the stand
- How the weight of the artwork will be supported
- Whether the artwork needs to be removable
- How individual acrylic pieces will connect
- Whether the display is freestanding, wall-mounted, or suspended
- How visible hardware and connectors will affect the design
3. Model the Display in Fusion
Create a 3D model of the proposed display system in Fusion.
Model the acrylic pieces at the actual thickness of the material you plan to use. Use a user parameter of ply for the thickness so it can be updated easily. Think about how the individual laser cut pieces will actually be assembled.
Possible joining methods include:
- Acrylic adhesive
- Bolts, screws, and other mechanical fasteners
- Slots and tabs
- Press-fit connections
- 3D printed brackets or connectors
Including a simplified representation of the artwork, in the Fusion model can be useful for checking scale, fit, and overall presentation. You can 3D scan the object or make simple primitive shapes in Fusion based on its main forms.
5. Laser Cut a Test Part
Select at least one important part of your design and prepare it for laser cutting. You may laser cut additional pieces if you are ready to fabricate more of the display.
6. Create a Render
Create a clear render in Fusion showing the proposed display stand. The render should clearly communicate the form, scale, materials, and overall presentation of the design.
