8.01 Measuring, Layout, and Cut Lists

Measure the Material You Have

Nominal material names are not reliable finished dimensions. Measure stock thickness, width, and usable length before designing a joint or laying out a group of parts. Use one unit system consistently on each drawing.

Make a small drawing with overall dimensions, part thicknesses, connection locations, and the object or space the structure will serve. Mark which dimensions matter most for fit.

Account for the kerf between parts. Keep rough-cut allowances separate from finished dimensions. For repeated parts, use an approved stop or template after confirming the first part; do not rely on copying each part from the last.

Plan Connections Now

Sketch how the steel brackets and plastic element will attach. Show fastener access, clearance for removal, and the order of assembly. A full-size cardboard model can reveal a problem before a tool is used.
