Overview

Students present their kinetic bicycle sculptures and examine how movement, construction, and material decisions communicate artist intent and experiences to a viewer. Students begin with the work’s actual condition and complete a self-assessment before hearing peer feedback.

Students then compare their own critique predictions with the actual peer discussion. Each student is tasked to identify one fabrication lesson to carry into the second half of the course, where wood, mechanical fasteners, formed plastic, and finished metal parts will be combined.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the completed or current state of a sculpture accurately.
  • Present the work and demonstrate its approved activation.
  • Give specific feedback grounded in visible form and observed movement.
  • Compare self-assessment with peer observations.
  • Identify a transferable fabrication lesson and a useful revision.

Key Terms

  • Critique: A discussion of how an artwork functions and communicates.
  • Self-assessment: An evidence-based evaluation of one’s own work.
  • Artistic intention: The experience or meaning an artist is working toward.
  • Observation: A description grounded in what can be seen or experienced.
