Overview

This studio module emphasizes independent fabrication and realistic planning. Begin class by identifying three to five specific outcomes for the bicycle sculpture, then work through the cuts, joints, mechanisms, and revisions needed to achieve them.

At the end of class, compare the actual work to the plan. Use the results to define the next work session, including any material, tool, or technical help needed.

Learning Objectives

  • Break a large fabrication project into achievable work sessions.
  • Write goals that describe observable results.
  • Prioritize functioning structure and movement.
  • Use a test to decide whether to continue or revise a design.
  • Evaluate progress and identify concrete next steps.

Key Terms

  • Milestone: A significant, observable stage of project completion.
  • Dependency: A task that must be completed before another can proceed.
  • Prototype: A test version made to answer a specific question.
  • Bottleneck: A resource or task that limits progress.
  • Work plan: A short sequence of actions and intended outcomes.
  • Progress documentation: A record showing changes, tests, and decisions over time.
