Overview

Students present their bicycle ideation sketches and reference artist research. Welding PPE is reviewed and students are introduced to metal fabrication tools and basic MIG Welding. In the morning all students run a simple bead on scrap steel. In the afternoon the process is reviewed and students practice welding small pieces of scrap metal together in preparation for fabricating their kinetic bicycle sculptures.

The goal is to develop enough control and familiarity with MIG welding to begin safely fabricating components for the kinetic bicycle sculpture project.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify basic MIG welding equipment and controls.
  • Follow appropriate welding PPE and safety procedures.
  • Position the MIG gun and maintain a consistent welding distance and travel speed.
  • Run basic weld beads on scrap steel.
  • Tack weld and join small pieces of steel.
  • Begin applying welding and metal fabrication skills to the bicycle sculpture project.
