12.02 Build Your First Rough Cut
On this page
A rough cut helps you discover what your video needs while you still have access to the XR Studio. Use the Adobe Premiere editing skills from the earlier footage and sound exercise. Keep the edit simple enough to revise quickly. Keep the existing target of approximately 30–60 seconds in mind. Use the strongest material rather than stretching every take.
Make Your Own Edit
- Organize your files so you can work efficiently. Keep your editing project, footage, audio, and exports in clearly labeled folders. Preserve the original recording folders and a backup of all files in the cloud or other storage media.
- Create your a video project and initial sequence. Import the shared recordings and your sound. For collaborative projects, each student chooses and arranges their own shots.
- Place useful takes in an order that shows a beginning, a change or development, and an ending. Start with simple cuts and trim unnecessary pauses.
- Make a list of missing material. Insert a a labeled storyboard image or temporary title such as “Missing close-up of the object.” into the timeline with accurate shot timing, similar to an animatic. A rough cut may contain placeholders before replacing them with finished material.
- Add enough sound to test the idea. Place important dialogue, effects, or ambience. Detailed sound cleanup and color adjustments can wait until the sequence works.
- Watch the full sequent without stopping so you can experience the real pacing. Make note of shots that drag on too long without changing or shots that are too fast and confusing. What can a viewer understand? Where does the sequence feel rushed, slow, or incomplete? List the most important fixes so you can capture the needed footage during the next XR Studio shoot.
