12.01 Studio Shooting Checklist

Before Recording
- Choose the most important shots you can complete today. Review your existing script and storyboard. Revise the plan if a simpler setup works better.
- Agree on who will perform, handle props, assist the camera or lights, and note useful takes. Roles can change between setups.
- Finish the parts of the prop or environment the camera will see. Test the framing before adding detail elsewhere.
- Check the camera image, lighting, virtual background, and any sound you need to record.
Record and Review
- Rehearse the action once before recording. Check where each performer moves and looks.
- Start recording.
- Identify the shot and take out loud so it baked in the recording or in a simple written note.
- Allow a short pause, perform the action, pause again, then stop. A couple of extra seconds at either end gives you room to trim.
- Play back the recording. Is the action visible? Is the subject in focus? Does the background look right through the camera? Avoid focal lengths that show the individual LEDs.
- Repeat the shot once while everyone is in place.
- Before moving to a new setup capture more coverage of the shot.
- Capture a closer view, reaction, or detail when it will help the edit. (Remember: Change angle and distance.)
- You do not need every possible camera angle.
- For matching shots, check prop placement, performer movement, and lighting. A quick setup photo and a note about the best take can help you repeat the scene.
Before Leaving
- Confirm where the recordings are stored. Label the files consistently. Make sure every collaborator can access the shared media.
- Copy the complete recording folders and keep a backup separate from your working copy. Preserve the original files and folder names.
- Write down a list of missing shots, sounds, props, or environment changes.
