Overview

Each student builds a digital environment tailored to the shots they planned with their group. Creators reuse their captured or modeled assets where appropriate, while also modeling or adapting additional geometry to establish the scene’s location, mood, and spatial relationships. Throughout this phase, students concentrate on what the camera will see and how the background supports the performer and physical props.

Students use Blender to prepare their assets, and they follow the lab’s Unreal Engine and disguise workflow to assemble the virtual set. Artists check scale, orientation, origins, materials, and texture file paths before moving assets between applications. In addition, creators run simple camera previews and test a small section of the environment before investing time in fine details. Finally, each student archives the source files and maintains a clearly labeled project build ready for the XR Studio.

Learning Objectives

  • Translate storyboards and a shot list into spatial requirements for a virtual environment
  • Arrange foreground, middle-ground, and background elements to support the composition
  • Create or adapt assets that fit the project’s visual direction
  • Check asset scale, orientation, origins, and textures before export
  • Identify material or appearance changes when an asset moves between applications
  • Prepare and test the environment using the lab’s approved project workflow
  • Organize source files, exported assets, texture files, and project versions for handoff
