Overview

In this module, we will work with the OptiTrack motion capture system in the XR Studio to record human movement and translate it into animation data. You will see how a performer’s actions can drive a digital character and how motion capture fits into workflows for animation, games, XR, and virtual production. The work you do here will help prepare you to apply captured motion to your own humanoid character in the next stage of the project.

In this module we will explore the intersection of physical performance and digital 3D space by bridging the gap between raw motion data and final character animation. In this section, you will learn the techniques for bringing captured movement to life, starting with understanding how optical tracking data is managed and exported from software like Motive. From there, we will prepare original humanoid meshes using auto-rigging tools like Mixamo and tackle the core technical process of retargeting skeletal animation data onto your custom character rigs using Maya or Blender. Finally, you will enhance your moving characters by building simple digital environments, animating secondary objects, establishing lighting and camera angles, and integrating original sound design to produce a video animation sequence.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the basic purpose of motion capture in animation and XR workflows
  • Identify the main components of the OptiTrack motion capture system
  • Record a motion capture performance in the XR Studio
  • Describe how captured movement data can be applied to a 3D humanoid character
  • Understand the role of retargeting in transferring motion data from a performer to a digital model
  • Recognize how motion capture connects physical performance, animation, and virtual production
  • Execute a standard motion capture workflow by preparing a custom 3D mesh, auto-rigging it in a T-pose, and accurately retargeting optical motion data onto the character rig.
  • Construct a basic 3D scene using Maya or Blender that integrates the animated character, additional environmental meshes, and secondary object animation.
  • Apply basic cinematography and lighting techniques by setting intentional light sources and rendering multiple distinct camera angles.
  • Combine visual and audio elements by editing rendered video sequences and syncing an original, self-authored sound effect to the final 3D animation.
