05.01 Podcast Review In Class Exercise Assignment

Assignment Overview

Listen to the completed podcast edits in small groups. The goal is to identify what is working, notice anything that distracts from listening, and determine whether any final revisions would improve the podcast.

Take brief notes while listening, but concentrate primarily on the experience of hearing the complete piece.

You are not expected to critique every second of the podcast. Listen for enough of the beginning, middle, and ending to evaluate structure, pacing, editing, and audio quality. Listen, discuss the questions below. Return to specific sections of the podcast when necessary.

Podcast Review Questions

You do not need to answer all of the questions. These are provided as a guide for your review and discussions.

Content and Structure

  • What is the podcast about? Is that clear early in the recording?
  • Does the beginning make you want to continue listening?
  • Does the conversation or story have a clear progression?
  • Are there sections that feel repetitive, unnecessary, or out of order?
  • Is anything confusing or missing?
  • Does the ending feel intentional and complete?

Editing and Pacing

  • Does the podcast move at an appropriate pace?
  • Are there pauses that feel too long or edits that feel too abrupt?
  • Can you hear any edits that are distracting?
  • Are there places where removing or shortening material would improve the podcast?
  • Are there moments that feel rushed and could use more space?

Audio Quality

  • Are all speakers easy to understand?
  • Are the voices at reasonably consistent levels?
  • Is anything noticeably too loud or too quiet?
  • Do you hear hiss, hum, clipping, distortion, room noise, mouth sounds, handling noise, or other distracting sounds?
  • Are there sudden changes in sound quality between edits?
  • If music or sound effects are used, do they support the podcast without making the voices difficult to hear?

Overall Experience

  • What is the strongest moment in the podcast?
  • What moment needs the most improvement?
  • What is one specific edit that would make the podcast better?
  • Is there anything that should not be changed because it is already working well?

Final Review

At the end of the review, identify the following and add as a reply to the discussion board on Canvas.

  1. One strength of the podcast.
  2. One content or pacing revision, if needed.
  3. One audio or technical revision, if needed.
  4. The most important change to make before the final export.

Feedback should be specific and useful. Instead of saying something is simply “good” or “bad,” identify what you heard and explain how it affected your experience as a listener.
