Assignment Overview

A virtual environment is more than what appears inside the camera frame. Sound can establish location, connect physical actions to an environment, and suggest events or spaces that the viewer cannot see.

Using your phone, record original sounds that could belong to one of the interior or exterior environments captured for the previous photogrammetry assignment.

Do not edit or process the recordings yet. We will use these files to learn basic sound editing in Adobe Audition

1. Environmental / Ambient Sound

Record approximately 30–60 seconds of continuous environmental sound.

This might include room tone, ventilation, traffic, wind, machinery, people in the distance, or another sound that establishes a location.

Remain still while recording and avoid handling the phone unnecessarily.

2. Action / Foley Sound

Record a physical action that could accompany something happening on screen.

Examples include footsteps, clothing movement, a door, an object being placed on a surface, scraping, impacts, or another intentional physical sound.

Make several attempts and submit your best recording.

3. Off-Screen Event

Record a sound that could make the viewer imagine something happening outside the camera frame.

Examples include approaching footsteps, a distant impact, a voice, a closing door, a machine starting, or another unseen event.

Make several attempts and submit your best recording.

Recording Tips

Get the phone close to the sound when practical and keep it still while recording. Record several seconds before and after the sound you want to capture.

Listen to your recording before leaving the location. If the recording is distorted, too quiet, interrupted, or dominated by unwanted noise, record another take.

Use the native recording application on your phone. Additional recording equipment is not required.
