Note: You can upload a single .zip archive of all your files labeled inside the archive for easier submission to Canvas.
Assignment Overview
A virtual environment is more than what appears inside the camera frame. Sound can establish location, connect physical actions to an environment, and suggest events or spaces that the viewer cannot see. Create a small collection of original sounds for the virtual production environment you are building in Blender.
Using your phone, record original sounds that could belong to one of the interior or exterior environments captured for the previous photogrammetry assignment. Do not edit or process the recordings yet. We will use these files to learn basic sound editing in Adobe Audition
Next week, you will record video using your assembled 3D environment on the XR Stage. Later, you will edit and color correct the footage and combine it with the sounds captured for this assignment. Think of the sound recordings as assets for your scene, not as unrelated sound exercises.
1. Environmental / Ambient Sound
Record approximately 30–60 seconds of continuous environmental sound.
This might include:
- room tone
- ventilation
- traffic
- wind
- machinery
- people in the distance
2. Action / Foley Sound
Record a physical action that could accompany something happening on screen.
Examples include
- character footsteps
- clothing movement
- a door
- an object being placed on a surface
- scraping
- impacts
3. Off-Screen Event
Record a sound that could make the viewer imagine something happening outside the camera frame.
Examples include:
- approaching footsteps
- a distant impact
- a voice
- a closing door
- a machine starting
- microwave ding
Recording Tips
Get the phone close to the sound when practical and keep it still while recording. Record several seconds before and after the sound you want to capture.
Remain still while recording and avoid handling or touching the phone.
Listen to your recording before leaving the location. If the recording is distorted, too quiet, interrupted, or dominated by unwanted noise, record another take.
Use the native recording application on your phone. Additional recording equipment is not required.
Make several attempts and submit your best recording.
Connect the Sound to Your Scene
The three recordings should make sense together with your Blender virtual production environment.
Consider:
- Where are we?
- What could the performer do there?
- What might be happening outside the frame?
You do not need to create a complete story, but the visual environment and sound recordings should begin to suggest the same world.
