Overview
Virtual Production combines digital environments and assets with physical cameras, performers, lighting, and sets to create images that blend real and virtual space. In this module, captured environments from the previous week’s photogrammetry assignment will be brought into the XR Studio to demonstrate how a 3D scan can become a virtual set.
Students will also begin working with captured 3D meshes in Blender. Basic 3D navigation, transforms, camera placement, mesh cleanup, and rendering will be introduced so captured 3D assets can be prepared for later use in virtual production, digital fabrication, and other 3D workflows.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the basic virtual production workflow from 3D asset to recorded camera image
- Identify the roles of Unreal Engine, Disguise, the XR display, and the physical camera in a virtual production workflow
- Navigate a 3D scene in Blender
- Move, rotate, scale, duplicate, and position 3D objects in Blender
- Reorient and position imported 3D scans in a usable coordinate system
- Remove unnecessary geometry from a captured 3D mesh
- Position a virtual camera and create a rendered image from a 3D scan
- Recognize how camera position, scale, and perspective affect the appearance of a virtual environment
