Overview

Welcome to Co/Lab and the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Interactive Media Lab.

In this first module, you will explore how physical objects, people, and spaces can be captured from reality and transformed into digital 3D assets. You will begin in the 3D Capture Studio with hands on structured light scanning and mobile photogrammetry, then use your captured content in a short collaborative production challenge.

The goal is not only to learn how to make a 3D scan, but to begin thinking about what becomes possible once something from the physical world has a digital double that can be moved, scaled, duplicated, transformed, fabricated, or placed into a new environment.

Learning Objectives

  • Capture a human head with a structured light 3D scanner
  • Teach and assist another student with a basic structured light scanning workflow
  • Capture an object using mobile photogrammetry
  • Apply basic photogrammetry capture practices including image overlap, camera movement, coverage, and consistent lighting
  • Process and export a photogrammetry capture as a textured 3D model
  • Recognize common causes of incomplete or unsuccessful 3D captures
  • Use a captured 3D asset as part of a collaborative creative experiment
  • Organize, label, transfer, and submit digital production files
