Before 3D Head Scanning Checklist
The person being scanned should:
- remove glasses and shiny accessories
- sit comfortably and stay as still as possible
- keep a neutral facial expression
- keep lips gently closed
- look at one fixed point
- keep hair as smooth and still as practical
The scanner operator should have enough room to move completely around the person’s head. Move tripping hazards out of the way and if using a tethered scanner, ensure there is enough slack in the data and power cables to move around the subject.
1. Start a Face / IR Scan
Use Face Scan / IR Scan Mode with texture enabled.
Use Feature Alignment.
Begin at a short working distance for good facial detail.
Keep the scanner at the correct distance:
Blue = too far Green = good Red = too close
2. Scan the Face First
Start in front of the face.
Move slowly and steadily.
Capture:
face → forehead → temples → ears
Then raise the scanner slightly to capture the face from above.
Lower and angle the scanner upward to capture:
under the nose → chin → underside of jaw → neck
Include part of the shoulders. They provide useful geometry for maintaining tracking as you move around the head.
3. Move Around the Head
Once the face is captured, continue around one side of the head.
Capture:
ear → side of head → top of head → hair → back of head → opposite side → opposite ear
Move the scanner in gentle up-and-down arcs as you travel around the person.
Do not repeatedly rescan the face. The subject’s eyes and facial expression may have moved.
4. Check the Areas Beginners Miss
Before stopping, confirm that you captured:
top of head
behind both ears
back of head
under chin
neck and shoulders
If Tracking Is Lost
STOP moving forward.
Do not wave the scanner around.
Return slowly to an area that was already scanned, such as:
shoulder → ear → side of head
Wait for tracking to recover, then continue.
Before Finishing
Rotate the digital scan and look for obvious holes or missing areas.
If an important area is missing, return to nearby successfully scanned geometry and move gradually into the missing area.
When the head is reasonably complete, stop the scan.
Peer Teaching - Learn it → do it → teach it
After scanning your partner:
- Save the scan.
- Show the next student how you operated the scanner.
- The student you just scanned becomes the next scanner operator.
