Add simple scenery in Blender using a ground plane and a few basic mesh objects. This beginner friendly tutorial shows how to turn an empty scene around a rigged character into a quick environment for rendering and animation.
Give the scene more depth. Add and scale a plane, create a cone, move objects into position, and duplicate props. These simple Blender modeling tools help you build a basic setting for animation with minimal effort.
Shortcuts covered:
- Shift + A: Add mesh objects
- S: Scale the ground plane
- G: Move objects
- G, then Z: Move along the vertical axis
- Shift + D: Duplicate props

How do you add extra mesh objects to Blender to just have some scenery for an animation?
Here I have some retargeting, motion capture animation and a rigged character, but they’re just kind of in a void. So I want to add the minimum amount of extra materials so I can just export an interesting looking animation.
If I go ahead and press shift A, I can add a plane. will show up here in the middle, but if I press s then I can quickly scale this plane up. now I have a separate plane then I can add some other objects very quickly just add some depth to the scene. If I press shift a mesh, I make a cone. can press g z to bring the cone up. And if I look from the top direction, such as right here, I can press G, move it around here, press shift D, just add a few different cones around.
Now I have suddenly a scene that kind of looks more interesting than just the default. Sure, I could sculpt the ground and do other things, but this is the bare minimum that I can do. Now I have some extra objects in my scene.
So hopefully you can add just a few extra objects to an animation to create a quick world without much effort. Happy 3D modeling!
